Failure Description

The illustration is of cast iron failure under torsion.  The failure surface is at 45 degrees  to the longitudinal axis.  Thus the failure surface takes the orientation which produces the maximum possible tensile stress component (principal stress) as acting upon it.  The general failure criteria must respect and reflect this physical characteristic for this particular material type all while being completely compatible with many other physical failure characteristics across the entire spectrum of isotropic materials types.
